During the upcoming 2010 season, Novato Youth Football will be offering a new level of play geared toward providing five to seven year olds an instructional experience in tackle youth football. Called the "Tiny Mites," the intent of this new level of play is allow younger children who have previously not been old enough to play tackle football an opportunity to learn the basics of tackle football in a non-competitive, instructional environment. Like all other Novato Youth Football players, participants will be issued a full set of gear including helmet, shoulder pads and leg pads and each player will be responsible for their own practice jersey, practice pants and girdle.

The team name will be the "Rumble Bees." With a primary focus on training, the Rumble Bees coaching staff will not focus on weekly games. Instead, they will focus on teaching players the fundamentals of both offensive and defensive tackle football and while there may be opportunities players for the Rumble Bees to scrimmage teams from other towns, instructional guidance will be the primary focus of the program. In keeping with the younger age group, practice times and frequency will be reduced relative to Novato Youth Football's older, competitive programs. Siimilarly, prices are reduced to $200 and there are no additional jersey costs involved.

Coach Michael Wood has decided to step away (hopefully temporarily!) from coaching for now. Coach Wood has been part of Novato Youth Football and its predecessor, Novato Pop Warner, since 1996. He has served as an assistant coach and then as a
Head Coach for nine years, including the last three years as Head Coach of the 2007 Killer Bees, the 2008 Stingers, and the 2009 Yellow Jackets. During this time Coach Wood has mentored hundreds of young men. His dedication to our program and to
community service is an example for us all. During his lengthy service, Coach Wood has spent over two thousand hours on the practice field and the game field and changed the lives of countless Novato families. Coach Wood has led his teams to City Championships, Division Championships, Conference Championships, Regional Championships, and National Championship appearances. Coach Wood has taught his teams to win with dignity and to handle adversity with class. Please join the Board of Novato Youth Football in extending a heartfelt thank you to Coach Wood and his family. Two AYF-sponsored Under Armour Coaching/Combine
opportunites are coming up for both coaches and your players

The Friday night Under Armour Coaches Clinic gives local youth and high school coaches the opportunity to meet and hear from present and former NFL and NCAA coaches. Past and current speakers have included former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach, former University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt, University of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier and former NY Jets coach/current Arizona State University offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone. The Coaches Clinic is a chance to learn and network as well as provide an opportunity to put these teachings to work on the field, as any coach that attends the Under Armour Coaches Clinic will have the opportunity to assist on-field Saturday and Sunday at the Under Armour Skills Camp and Under Armour Combine. Each coach attending the clinic will receive an Under Armour t-shirt.

As part of the Under Armour Combine Weekend, we will be holding the AYF Combine Clinic for area youth athletes age 8-13. These athletes will be introduced to Under Armour Combines and the C360 evaluation metric as they learn the fundamentals and training for Combine drills such as the 20-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, Broad Jump and Sit & Reach evaluation. Assessments for nutrition and mental toughness, part of the C360, will also be included. The athletes that participate in the Youth Combine Clinic will have the opportunity to learn from both local coaches as well as members of the Under Armour Combine coaching staff which features former NFL, NCAA and current Under Armour All-America Football Game coaches. Each athlete will receive an Under Armour shirt, AYF Player Card and AYF uniform patch.
